Few things are more exciting for a VC fund than meeting a great group of new companies. Since Quake launched its second accelerator program in August, it’s been nonstop excitement around our Battery Park office. It helps that all 12 companies that have been accepted into our fall cohort have exceptional teams and are extremely passionate about the work they’re doing. Recoup Fitness, a burgeoning startup with impressive traction, is a perfect example. Recoup hopes to become the leading name in muscle recovery and injury prevention; to them, current players in the space aren’t finding the right balance of top quality products and affordable prices.
The rehabilitation market is a $30 billion industry. But Recoup’s best-selling product, the Cold Massage Roller, isn’t some high-tech, ultra fancy machine that promises to heal all your joint problems in a matter of hours. If you’ve ever been to a doctor for any kind of physical therapy, you will know they almost always send you out with a paper cup with ice and tell you to place it where it hurts-- and that’s exactly what the Roller does. The Cold Massage Roller seems like an obvious idea, yet very few companies have managed to commercialize it and make it an actual sellable and reusable product. Recoup’s founder, Matt Hyder, saw a gap in the market and turned it into a fast-growing company with impressive traction and positive feedback from customers. With Olympic medalists, World Cup soccer players and seven NFL teams as clients already, it’s obvious that the Cold Roller produces great results.
Recoup Fitness was founded by athletes who have experienced first-hand the problems the company aims to resolve. Hyder was an Olympic-level athlete from a young age and has a background in Rugby and Taekwondo. Natalie Dunn, Head of Operations, and Glenna Haug, Recoup’s Creative Director, are both dedicated athletes themselves. With these athletic backgrounds, each team member has such a strong work ethic instilled in them that no dream is too outlandish to envision and no goal too complex so long as they work hard for what they hope to achieve.
But this is all just the beginning. Matt and the rest of the Recoup Fitness team are constantly developing new high-quality products to add to their impressive collection. Next up? The Hot Roller Ball. With support from each other, the team embraces the philosophy that every day is a new opportunity to make their company stronger and improve the wellbeing of athletes everywhere.
